If you’re considering the purchase of a snug new stove for your home, chances are you’ve probably stumbled across the term ‘eco design’. As the name suggests ‘eco’ stands for ecological – representing a new standard of environmental regulations set out by the government. From 1st January 2022, it was made law that all stove manufacturers must improve the performance and efficiency of their stoves, any solid fuel appliances that do not meet the latest eco design regulations are banned from being sold to the public.
Why were the Eco Design stove regulations put in place?
Air pollution poses a significant environmental hazard to public health, and domestic burning is a prominent factor. In 2019, DEFRA (The Department of the Environment, Fisheries and Rural Affairs) incorporated wood burning stoves in their 2019 Clean Air Strategy. By doing so, stoves will see a significant reduction in harmful emissions, thereby enhancing the quality of the air we breathe. The emission standards include limits for the following toxic pollutants; particulate matter (PM), organic gaseous compounds (OGC), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx).
Recent studies by SIA (The Stove Industry Association) show a modern eco design ready stove or fireplace produces a staggering 90% less emissions than an open fire and 80% less than the average 10-year old stove.
I have an old stove in my home, do I need to replace it?
Don’t worry, it is not a legal requirement for you to replace an old stove in your home. The new regulations apply to newly manufactured appliances that are made available for sale in the UK from 1st January 2022. Fireplace suppliers and installers must ensure all stoves sold from this date have been independently tested and verified as ‘Eco Design Compliant’.
What are the advantages of an Eco stove?
Undoubtedly, the primary advantage of an eco design stove is the substantial reduction of emissions that will inevitably be better for your health and those around you. But these stoves not only reduce the level of harmful air pollutants, their enhanced burning efficiency generates more heat with less fuel, ultimately costing you less to operate. Winner!
